Introductory-----Choosing the right modelling clay for you creation

When making any decision or researching for the right modelling clay for your application, you need to consider the end product, cost and skill level. For instance, you have to consider how to dry modelling clay you have bought. There are different types of clay. You may find that you want to use more than one type of modelling clay. Before selecting the clay that will be best to use, there are many variables to consider, and in wanting to share the knowledge i gained from shopping experiences, here is my introductory for you. Market-selling modelling clay can be divided into several types like light clay, hardening clay, resin clay, polymer clay, plasticine clay, etc. Those are the popular selling classifications of modelling clay. The following list advantages and disadvantage of each type for you. Then you can decide which type is the best clay for your handbuilding.

1. Light Clay
Advantages: Entry level, popular type of modelling clay for beginners , recommended for children more than 3 years of age. It it good to develop brand and hand coordination ability. This type of modelling clay is also suitable for handiwork fans doing handmade clay mold. Light clay, rich in colors, strong lifting, suitable for any shape. It is close to the foam texture after drying , very light, and has a matte texture on the surface. Disadvantages : The clay is too soft for shaping the mold in every detail. Also not flexible enough. The viscidity is too strong when contacting with other parts, it it difficult to separate them as it is so easy to get air dried.

2.Resin Clay 
Advantages: Suitable for adults like doing all kinds of DIY works. This is the only kind of modelling clay that is comparable to polymer clay. The material itself is shiny, with three types of transparency and translucent texture. It will gain a little toughness after being dried. Not easy to brittle even a little thin itself. The texture is superb because of the main material--resin. But a little heavy. Disadvantages : It is relatively sticky when the temperature is high. The surface is easily air-dried so it cannot be kneaded more than 3 minutes. So how long does modelling clay take to dry is also an important issue you have to consider. Repeated shaping will affect the texture of the material. White latex is generally needed and is not recommended for beginners to learn modelling by this type of clay !

3. Hardening Clay 
Advantages: Recommend friends over the age of 10, very good for create artistic works. Generally there are 3 colors of hardening clay being sold: White, gray, and coffee color. The texture is very close to the mud we played when we were kids. It would test your patience at the polishing of the works in the later period. What is made is very textured, similar to plaster. Disadvantages: It is not soft enough, and requires a relatively high skill for shaping the modelling clay. If you need a finer effect, you need to polish it. Too much trouble, is it ?

4.Polymer Clay
Advantages: The texture is very close to the mud we played as hardening clay. A little heavy. Can be colored with your favorite choice. Suitable for make it into any kinds of jewelry, decorations, garage kits, dolls. Very strong texture, excellent plasticity. As long as it is not baked, it can be used repeatedly, so it is suitable for making anti-genuine articles.Disadvantages: You need to wash hands before making. The color on your hands will be easily contaminate your work. You need to use the oven or hair dryer to fix the shape. So remember to asking how to dry te modelling clay before buying it as well as how to harden these clay and modelling clay materials.

5.Plasticine Clay
Advantages:Ideal for children over 3 years old. Assorted colors and non exotic, very soft, not easy to dry as well as not sticky. Disadvantages: Without any toughness, make it not easy to fix the shape. Suitable for children to play with, it is not recommended for adult to make some creations unless you are very good at shaping this type of clay.
